The JamBase Podcast Episode 30: Karl Denson & Turkuaz’s Shira Elias And Sammi Garett
Today, we share the 30th episode of The JamBase Podcast. Episode 30 features a pair of interviews recorded aboard Jam Cruise 17. Iconic musician Karl Denson goes “Reelin’ In The Years” before Shira Elias and Sammi Garett of Turkuaz discuss “The Art Of The Sit-In.” The episode starts with “The Rundown” of recent news stories and live music experiences.
Karl Denson and JamBase’s Scott Bernstein go “Reelin’ In The Years,” with a chat focusing on the different methods of touring Denson’s utilized from his start as a professional musician through the present. Denson recalls the plush experience of touring in a bus during his first gig with O’Bryan, a band that was managed by Don Cornelius of Soul Train. It was then into cars and vans for his time of the road with Greyboy Allstars. Karl D. then experienced plenty of flying and bus tours as part of Lenny Kravitz’s band. While Denson went back to vans for the first few years of touring with his Tiny Universe outfit, he joined The Rolling Stones in 2014 and he flies in The Stones’ private plane for their tours. Karl has plenty of interesting stories about all of the different projects he’s been involved with over the past four decades he shares in this not-to-be-missed interview.
Next, Scotty chats with Shira and Sammi about “The Art Of The Sit-In.” JamBase contributor Chad Berndtson wrote a monthly column of the same name for five years and it now lives on in audio form. And who could be better to start the new format with than Elias and Garett? The pair has plenty of experience guesting with other acts and they talk about what works for them and wasn’t doesn’t, as well as other topics.
As usual, “The Rundown” comes ahead of the interview segments. JamBase’s Andy Kahn and David Onigman host this episode’s installment. First, DaveO discusses special shows he caught at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall. Then, AK and DaveO dive into recent news stories including a number of tour and festival lineup announcements and the passing of Jerry Garcia Band vocalist Gloria Jones.
