The Fritz unveiled “Take Your Time,” the title track from a new studio album due out on March 24. Keyboardist John Medeski is featured on the single, which previews an LP that marks the Asheville, North Carolina-based quintet’s first with a post-COVID lineup including dynamic vocalist Datrian Johnson.
Guitarist and music director Jamie Hendrickson co-founded The Fritz with drummer Michael Tillis. The pair used the break prompted by the pandemic to revamp the lineup now rounded out by Johnson, keyboardist Thomson Knowles and Matt Schueler on synth bass. The Hendrickson-produced Take Your Time was tracked over several months last fall following collaborative songwriting sessions.

“Last year we rented a beach house in Florida specifically to hang out and write music together in a relaxed, fun environment,” Hendrickson said of the process that yielded the third full-length Fritz album. “Everyone contributed and brought along their unique personalities. Most of the songs come from that one session. I listened to the demos when I got back home to Asheville and knew right away we had an album.” Take Your Time features guest appearances from Medeski, Jonathan Lloyd (trombone, percussion and vocals), Rachel Waterhouse (vocals) and Jonathan Cole (saxophone).
Medeski’s signature organ stylings and Johnson’s powerhouse vocals shine on the band’s soulful new single. “Take Your Time” features a retro sound combining elements of soul, R&B and funk. Stream the track below:
