The Bad Plus shared a new single, “Electric Face.” The long-running jazz combo captured the song during sessions for their 2022 self-titled album.
The Bad Plus arrived on September 30, 2022. The album saw co-founding members drummer Dave King and bassist Reid Anderson expanding to a four-piece with the addition of guitarist Ben Monder and saxophonist Chris Speed after two decades as a drums/bass/piano trio.
The latest single from the newly-minted quartet dates back to The Bad Plus sessions. Anderson detailed the new number.
“I wrote ‘Electric Face’ in Kingston, NY during the summer of 2021, while listening to a lot of science podcasts,” he said. “When a caterpillar goes into the chrysalis and transforms into a moth, it basically dissolves and the structure is determined by an electrical pattern which is the guide that turns it from mush into a moth. There’s an electrical pattern in the face of the moth, and this is what inspired the song.”
