The Avett Brothers Cover Tom Petty On New Year’s Eve

By Scott Bernstein Jan 1, 2016 10:56 am PST

Americana act The Avett Brothers celebrated New Year’s Eve at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro on Thursday night. The group was joined by Asleep At The Wheel for two songs as well as Herbie Abernathy, Screaming J’s and Jim Avett during the 31-song performance that included a debut cover of Tom Petty’s “Don’t Do Me Like That.”

Abernathy, of Valient Thorr fame, reprised his role from last year as Father Time for the New Year’s Eve countdown and celebration. Herbie also led covers of “Time Is On My Side” and “Don’t Do Me Like That.” The encore featured all of the evening’s guests adding to The Avett’s rendition of “Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite.”
