Tenacious D Performs At Rock In Rio 2019: Pro-Shot Video

Tenacious D played before a massive crowd at this year’s Rock In Rio festival on September 28. Pro-shot video of the set, which featured special guest Junior Bass Groovador, can be viewed below as this week’s Full Show Friday selection.

The band led by Jack Black and Kyle Gass began their set at Parque Olímpico in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a series of songs from 2018’s Post-Apocalypto. Tenacious D then focuses on material from their first three album starting with the title track off 2012’s Rize Of The Fenix. Next came “Low Hangin Fruit” before Black welcomed Junior Bass Groovador during “Sax-A-Boom.”

Brazil’s own Junior Bass Groovador caught JB’s attention with his rendition of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” performed in the Forró party music style. Jack Black took to social media 10 days before Tenacious D’s Rock In Rio set asking fans to put him in touch with the bassist. Apparently, Black was able to connect with Groovador as Junior joined the group in Rio for the end of “Sax-A-Boom,” a cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and the evening’s penultimate song, “Double Team.”

Tenacious D followed the Nirvana cover with a run of “Dude (I Totally Miss You),” “Kickapoo” and “Beezleboss (The Final Showdown).” From there, JB, KG, bassist John Spiker, guitarist John Konesky and drummer Scott Seiver performed “The Metal,” “Dio” and “Tribute.” As noted, Junior Bass Groovador returned for an extended “Double Team” that featured a wild bass solo from the Brazilian musician. The D capped the set with “Fuck Her Gently.”
