Temples will issue their fifth album, BLISS, on June 26 through V2 Records. The English psychedelic rock band accompanied the announcement with “Jet Stream Heart,” the LP’s lead single and opening salvo.
The follow-up to the group’s 2023 Sean Ono Lennon-produced album Exotico finds Temples breaking new sonic ground. The record ventures into electronic territory while staying true to the band’s core DNA, pairing euphoric and melancholic late-’90s dance melodies with psych-tinged riffs and looping textures.
“BLISS ushers in a new chapter for Temples, showcasing their most experimental, polished and confident work to date,” according to press materials heralding the album’s release.
Frontman James Bagshaw is excited about sharing BLISS with the world. “We’ve just done exactly what we want to do in a purely selfish way, and that becomes not selfish when people connect with it,” Bagshaw said in a statement. The frontman hopes fans will embrace the new sound, adding “[p]eople should throw out whatever they thought we were – this is what we are.”
The euphoric “Jet Stream Heart” plays into the dance inspiration at the heart of BLISS. “For me, it’s Kylie Minogue, meets Daft Punk, meets Temples!” James Bagshaw told NME of the single. “These days we’re always just trying to make stuff that’s fun. That song started the whole thing for this record. The song is about being enticed by music itself, and it does it on its own. You’ll be walking past a club or a venue and there’s an allure to it. What is that pulls you in?”
