Saratoga Performing Arts Center, a.k.a. SPAC, hosted the fourth annual Wheels Of Soul Tour in Saratoga Springs, New York on Tuesday. The Marcus King Band and Drive-By Truckers opened for the tour’s traditional headliners, the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Guitarists Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi and the rest of their 12-piece ensemble were joined by guests from the other acts on the bill and more last night.
The Tedeschi Trucks Band opened with the recently revived cover of “Tell The Truth” by Derek & The Dominos. Susan then led the group on their own “Part Of Me” and the soulful “Don’t Know What It Means.” Next, Trucks mashed a bit of the Duane Allman-penned “Little Martha” into a typically gorgeous and powerful “Midnight In Harlem.”
Earlier this summer the TTB dusted off a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Down In The Flood” and it has become a staple of the group’s set ever since including a performance at SPAC. Next came a rare rendition of the Four Tops’ “Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever.” The cavalcade of guests began with Patterson Hood of Drive-By Truckers adding to Wings’ “Let Me Roll It.” Marcus King emerged a few songs later to go toe-to-toe with Derek Trucks on blues standard “Key To The Highway.”

Last night’s Tedeschi Trucks Band set concluded with “Shame,” a song expected to be on the troupe’s next album, and old favorite “Bound For Glory.” The evening came to a close with the help of two frequent TTB collaborators. Eric Krasno reprised his role from 2013, when he served as bassist on a series of Tedeschi Trucks Band dates. Krasno played bass and Tash Neal of The London Souls was the third guitarist on-stage for a triumphant “Statesboro Blues” encore.
