Tedeschi Trucks Band Kicks Off Fall Tour In Birmingham

Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to the road last night with a tour opening gig at the Alabama Theatre in Birmingham. The biggest question heading into this tour, their first since this past summer’s Wheels of Soul Tour, was if and when Kofi Burbridge would rejoin the band. The keyboardist has been recovering since undergoing emergency heart surgery back in June, with the band tapping Carey Frank to fill in. Frank was once again behind the keys last night, with plans for Burbridge to return to the road next month joining the band for their annual multi-night Beacon Theatre run.

Last night’s show at the historic 2,500-capacity theater kicked off with a pair of tunes from their most recent studio album Let Me Get By – “Laugh About It” and “Don’t Know What It Means.” The meaty ensemble worked their way through their usual mix of mix of originals and covers including takes on Derek and the Dominoes’ “Anyday,” George Jones’ “Color Of Blues,” Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers’ “How Blue Can You Get?” and Billy Taylor’s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free.”

Tedeschi Trucks Band included a number of covers that they had debuted over the summer in Kofi’s absence, which seem to signify they may be fair game as the tour moves forward. The rock and soul act opened their encore with “Let Me Roll It,” playing the Wings track from their 1973 album Band On The Run for the first time sans guests. The band closed out the night with the traditional song “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” and “Bound For Glory,” from their 2011 release Revelator.

Tedeschi Trucks Band return to the stage tonight with a show at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans. Check out a video of “Midnight In Harlem” from last night’s show and see the full setlist below:
