Tedeschi Trucks Band Kicks Off 2016 Beacon Theatre Run With Amy Ray
By Scott Bernstein Oct 1, 2016 • 7:15 am PDT
The Tedeschi Trucks Band continued a long-standing tradition of annual residencies at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on Friday night with the first of six shows. On Friday Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls opened and wound up sitting-in with the TTB to end the night.
Amy Ray began the show with a set of her own. Ray brought out Susan Tedeschi to sing the Indigo Girls song “Share The Moon.” Tedeschi also lent her voice to the Amy Ray original “Duane Allman” about the late co-founder of The Allman Brothers Band. It was then time for the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s headlining set. Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks‘ ensemble focused on covers throughout their performance which spanned over two hours. The group picked from a diverse group of original artists that included David Bowie, Santana, Allen Toussaint, George Harrison and Howlin’ Wolf.
The Tedeschi Trucks Band ended their first set of the 2016 Beacon run with a cover of Blind Faith’s “Had To Cry Today,” a song that is a recent addition to the group’s repertoire. However, the biggest surprise of the evening came to start the encore as the TTB dusted off a cover of Billy Taylor & Dick Dallas’s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free,” a staple of the Derek Trucks Band days. Susan then welcomed Amy Ray to share the stage for a show-closing cover of Bob Dylan’s “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere.”
Saturday marks the second night of this year’s Tedeschi Trucks Band run at The Beacon.
