Tedeschi Trucks Band unveiled a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “River” on Wednesday in Boston. Susan Tedeschi and Gabe Dixon teamed to perform the song from Mitchell’s legendary 1971 album, Blue to start the encore of the TTB’s second of four shows at the Orpheum Theatre.
“Do I Looked Worried” got last night’s 17-song concert underway. Next came “Laugh About It,” one of five songs from TTB’s Let Me Get By LP to make the setlist in Boston. The 12-piece ensemble played the title track of the album after “Until You Remember” and “Crying Over You.” An ensuing take on Elmore James’ blues classic “Done Somebody Wrong” was the first cover played on Wednesday.
Tedeschi Trucks Band’s main set rolled on with a rousing “High & Mighty” and the group’s recently debuted “Outside Woman Blues” (Blind Joe Reynolds) cover. From there the band took on Derek & The Dominos’ “Anyday” before working “Don’t Know What It Means” into “The Letter.” Next up was the Derek Trucks showcase “Midnight In Harlem” and the TTB’s version of Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers’ “How Blue Can You Get?” The frame concluded with a version of Let Me Get By standout “I Want More” that gave way to a portion of The Allman Brothers Band instrumental “Les Brers In A Minor.”
Susan Tedeschi and keyboardist Gabe Dixon emerged after the encore break for the gorgeous “River” duet. “Thank you so much Joni Mitchell for that wonderful song,” Tedeschi told the crowd following the cover. The rest of the band then came out to cap the evening with the David Bowie popularized “It Ain’t Easy.” Last night marked the band’s first take on the song penned by Ron Davies since January 17, 2017 as per Setlist.FM. The final TTB run of the year continues on Friday and concludes on Saturday.
