Tedeschi Trucks Band Debuts Toots & The Maytals and Allman Brothers Band Covers At The Beacon
By Jeffrey Greenblatt Oct 8, 2017 • 10:12 am PDT

Last night the Tedeschi Trucks Band played their second of six shows at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The Southern rock and soul ensemble offered up an “Evening With…” format, treating the sold-out crowd to two sets of music that saw the band mix material from their catalog along with a healthy dose of cover songs that included two debuts.
The night got underway with a pair of covers. First up was “Let Me Roll It” from Wings’ 1973 release Band On The Run, which was followed by a take on Derek & The Dominos’ “Keep On Growing,” from their lone studio effort Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs. More covers followed, after a take on their own “Just As Strange,” as Mike Mattison led the band through their debut performance of “Sailing On,” from Toots & The Maytals’ 1973 albume Funky Kingston. Elmore James’ “The Sky Is Crying” came next, with “Midnight In Harlem” and the pairing of Sleepy John Estes’ “Leaving Trunk” and Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s “Volunteer Slavery” closing out the first set.
For their second set of the night the meaty ensemble opened with “Anyhow,” from last year’s Let Me Get By. The band next dipped into Derek Trucks’ catalog for a take on “Get What You Deserve,” from his 2009 release Already Free. Three songs later the Tedeschi Trucks Band offered up their second cover debut of the night as Susan Tedeschi sang an emotionally charged a take on the Allman Brothers Band’s “Please Call Home,” from their 1970 release Idlewild South. More covers peppered the rest of the night, with takes on Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers’ “How Blue Can You Get?,” John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” and Jerry Garcia’s “Sugaree.”
The encore started with an emotional moment as Susan was joined by the recently returned Kofi Burbridge. Susan and Kofi joined forces for a gorgeous take on Leon Russell’s “A Song For You” before the night coming to a close with “Bound For Glory.”
