Tedeschi Trucks Band wrapped their first shows of 2024 in Atlantic City on Saturday. The second of two “Deuces Wild” concerts at Hard Rock Live at the Etess Arena saw the band premiering a song from the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.

All told the run saw three debuts, two from New Jersey native Bruce Springsteen — the apt “Atlantic City” on Friday and “State Trooper” on Saturday — and Aretha’s “It Ain’t Fair,” penned by renowned Motown songwriter Ron Miller.

While Aretha hailed from the Motor City, “It Ain’t Fair” arrived on Atlantic via her landmark 1970 album, This Girl’s in Love with You. The LP was cut at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama in 1969 using the recording facility’s famed session musicians.

Chief among them guitarist Duane Allman, who along with TTB guitarist Derek Trucks‘ uncle Butch Trucks, co-founded The Allman Brothers Band in 1969. Derek would join ABB 30 years later.

“Derek Trucks emulated the riffs Duane Allman laid down on the 1970 original,” as per JamBase’s coverage of the concert and “It Ain’t Fair,” “while Alecia Chakour channeled Franklin’s vocals.” No easy feat on either account although both musicians are more than qualified to do so.

Watch Chakour and Trucks feature on “It Ain’t Fair” along with a portion of TTB covering ABB’s “Dreams” below, which came roughly half way through the main set:
