Taylor Hicks Guests With Umphrey’s McGee In Birmingham

Chicago jam stalwarts Umphrey’s McGee began the latest leg of their summer tour last night at Avondale Brewing Company in Birmingham, Alabama. The band was joined by one-time American Idol champion Taylor Hicks for the bust out of a Southern Rock classic.
Hicks guest-spot came at the end of the first set, when he emerged to lead UM through Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See.” Umphrey’s hadn’t covered “Can’t You See” since April 18, 2015 in Austin, a version that also featured Taylor Hicks. Last night’s show also featured an impressive “Great American” > “Baby You’re A Rich Man” (The Beatles) > “Great American” sequence, both installments of “Cemetary Walk,” a rare “Padgett’s Profile” and a “Slacker” encore that saw guitarist Jake Cinninger plays keys and included a “The Message” (Grandmaster Flash) jam.
