Sylvan Esso Announces New Album ‘No Rules Sandy’ & Shares Single

Sylvan Esso will issue a new album, No Rules Sandy, via Loma Vista Recordings on August 12. The duo of Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn also shared the single, “Didn’t Care.”

No Rules Sandy is the follow up to the duo’s 2020 album Free Love. Produced by Sylvan Esso, Meath and Sanborn left their home in Durham, North Carolina in early 2022 and decamped to a rental house in Los Angeles where they set up a makeshift studio and began writing and recording. Sylvan Esso recorded at their Betty’s studio in Chapel Hill, North Carolina as well.

No Rules Sandy saw Sylvan Esso working with TJ Maiani, who plays drums on “Alarm” and “Your Reality,” the latter is a previously released single that also contains a string arrangement from Gabriel Kahane. Saxophonist Sam Gendel appears on “How Did You Know” and “Coming Back to You.” Another previously released single, “Sunburn” arrived in May. Fans at the Newport Folk Festival got a chance to hear the record — described in a press release as “an unbroken ribbon of sound” — when Meath and Sanborn performed it in its entirety at the famed festival on Sunday. The duo also have plans to present the album at upcoming shows in New York City and Los Angeles.

No Rules Sandy “feels like who we actually are. It just feels like us,” Meath said. “We’re not trying to fit into the mold, just happily being our freak selves.”

“I think that the ultimate effect of our last record and the pandemic has been the feeling of like, ‘Fuck that, I know what I want,’” Sanborn added. “And it’s now, or never. So let’s get out there and do it.”
