News broke recently of an upcoming tour pairing Neil Young with Promise Of The Real. Promise Of The Real features Lukas Nelson (vocals/guitar) and Micah Nelson (guitar, vocals), with Anthony Logerfo (drums), Corey McCormick (bass) and Tato Melgar (percussion) rounding out the lineup. The Canadian elder statesman of rock and the band led by the sons of American elder statesmen of country Willie Nelson, will soon head out on the Rebel Content Tour in support of an upcoming record, The Monsanto Years, which Promise Of The Real recorded with Young and is slated for release in June.

Young is no stranger to performing with the Red Headed Stranger and also has graced the stage with his sons prior to the stealth show they pulled off last weekend in California. For this week’s installment of Sunday Cinema we’re taking a look back at times Neil and The Nelsons have joined forces to melt faces, gently or otherwise. The performances below come from various Farm Aid concerts held over the past 30 years, which have frequently seen founders Young and Willie Nelson collaborate, and recently seen Promise Of The Real team with Young as well.

Willie backed Neil for most of his set at Farm Aid 6 which was held at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa on April 24, 1993. Watch “Four Strong Winds,” “Last of His Kind,” “From Hank to Hendrix” and “Are There Any More Real Cowboys” with Nelson and Trigger alongside Young.

A year later on September 18, 1994 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Young was performing with his band Crazy Horse when Willie joined in for a cover of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower.”

On October 4, 1997 Farm Aid was held at The World Amphitheater outside of Chicago in Tinley Park, Illinois and saw another Willie-assisted Neil set.

Phish made their sole appearance at Farm Aid on October 3, 1998, again in Tinley Park and brought out Willie and Neil to help close down their set.

Farm Aid returned to The World in Tinley Park on September 18, 2005 for its 20th anniversary that saw this special collaboration between Young, Willie and the timeless Emmylou Harris.

Farm Aid founders Young, Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp – along with the more recent sponsor Dave Matthews, collaborated at the 25th annual Farm Aid at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 2, 2010.

In 2011 Promise Of The Real made their Farm Aid debut, and Willie came out to join in on a couple of tunes at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in Kansas City on August 13.

Young returned with Crazy Horse September 22, 2012 at Hershey Park Stadium in Hershey, Pennsylvania and again brought Willie out to support the band.

In what now appears to be a taste of what was yet to come, Young and Lukas and Micah Nelson along with the rest of Promise Of The Real shared the stage together at last year’s Farm Aid, held September 13, 2014 at Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Walnut Creek, North Carolina.
