Sun Ra Arkestra unveiled the new single “Chopin.” The track is featured on the legendary jazz outfit’s forthcoming studio album, Living Sky, which arrives via Omni Sound on October 7.
Led by 98-year-old musical director, alto saxophonist Marshall Allen, Sun Ra Arkestra recorded the follow-up to 2021’s Swirling at Rittenhouse SoundWorks in Philadelphia on June 15, 2021. A total of 19 musicians contributed to Living Sky, an album commissioned by executive producer and Omni Sound founder Ahmet Ulug.
Sun Ra, the group’s namesake who passed away in 1993, came up with an arrangement of Frédéric Chopin’s “Prelude in A Major.” The track out today, “Chopin,” is the first studio recording of Sun Ra’s “elaboration” from Chopin’s “miniature Opus 28 No. 7.”
“‘Chopin’ was one of Sun Ra’s features for the lyrical wizardry of Marshall’s alto, the originator of Avant Garde saxophone, truly a wonder to behold at the age 98,” explained baritone saxophonist Knoel Scott. “This freshened arrangement of this Sun Ra Classic is a testament to the vintaged mastery of Marshall Allen and is truly reflective of his position as a keeper of the Sun Ra Legacy.”
