Strong Sunday Matinee Ends Widespread Panic 2016 Red Rocks Run

Georgia rockers Widespread Panic concluded a three-night stand at the renowned Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on Sunday, the band’s 51st straight sell-out at the famed venue. John Bell and Co. had plenty of treats in store for the traditional Sunday afternoon show to bring the run to a strong end.

Widespread Panic changed it up in a big way on Sunday, delivering 11 tour debuts for the capacity crowd including two songs that hadn’t been performed in over 100 shows. The six-piece opened up with the instrumental “The Take Out” before lighting into “Blackout Blues.” From there, “Little Kin” gave way to a pair of covers: “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” and “Travelin’ Light.” WSP tipped their hat to the Colorado Spreadheads with “Old Neighborhood” and continued on with “Who Do You Belong To?” ahead of the band’s beloved cover of Jorma Kaukonen’s “Genesis.” The final first set of this year’s Red Rocks run concluded with “Up All Night” and “You Should Be Glad.”

The second set was a powerful affair right from the “Disco” > “Goin’ Out West” get go. A “Bear’s Gone Fishin'” > “Rock” pairing set the pace for a double dose of The Band covers: “Ophelia” and “The Shape I’m In.” JB belted “Ribs & Whiskey” before it was time for the evening’s bust outs. Out of the “wood shed” came “Time Zones,” which was drummer Duane Trucks’ first version of the tune as Panic last played the song on July 2, 2014. Next up was the rare “Time Is Free,” one of just two performed since late 2014. As if that wasn’t enough, the band ended the set with a jaw-dropping “Low Spark” > “Love Tractor” two-some.

Widespread Panic wasn’t finished yet as the band said farewell with a triple encore. Up first was the band’s beautiful cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” which they originally debuted back on New Year’s Eve. The hard-hitting “Postcard” followed ahead of a joyous “Porch Song” finale. After a few nights off Widespread Panic continues the tour on Wednesday in Missoula.
