The Wood Brothers finished a three-show run opening for The String Cheese Incident on Sunday with a concert in Huber Heights, Ohio. SCI brought out the trio to share the stage on a cover of the Allen Toussaint-penned “Get Out Of My Life Woman” during their first of two sets at Rose Music Center.

Cheese’s time on the road with The Wood Brothers was part of the Colorado-based jam sextet’s spring tour, which continues through this weekend’s CaveJam festival in Pelham, Tennessee. Siblings Oliver Wood and Chris Wood along with multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix treated fans at the Dayton area venue to an 11-song performance featuring songs from seven of their eight previously released studio albums. The Wood Brothers’ next LP, Witness, arrives on August 1.

After opening with “Can’t Wait Another Day,” The String Cheese Incident delivered an expansive “Miss Brown’s Teahouse” that encompassed a cover of Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon.” The six-piece then served up “Way Back When,” their lone offering from the band’s latest studio album, 2023’s Lend Me A Hand. “Believe,” the title track from SCI’s 2017 LP, followed.

The Wood Brothers emerged to load the stage for SCI’s first “Get Out Of My Life Woman” since 2000. Oliver Wood played guitar and shared lead vocal duties with Cheese mandolinist/fiddler Michael Kang, while Chris Wood banged on a percussive instrument and Jano Rix joined Kyle Hollingsworth on keys.

Lee Dorsey originally recorded and scored a hit with “Get Out Of My Life Woman” in 1966. The song previewed the funk scene that would develop out of New Orleans in the ’70s. Allen Toussaint not only wrote the track but also produced Dorsey’s rendition.

Jano Rix threw down a tasty Clavinet solo towards the middle of the collaborative cover. Oliver Wood and Michael Kang traded verses on a song that was frequently played by the Jerry Garcia Band and performed numerous times by The Wood Brothers.

The String Cheese Incident continued sans guests with an “Illegal” that bled into fan-favorite “It Is What It Is.” A cover of The Allman Brothers Band classic “Revival” brought Cheese’s first set to a close.

SCI lit into “Just One Story” to kick off the second set. “Search” featuring “Drums” within came next ahead of “Bhangra Saanj.” From there, “Barstool” led into a set-closing run of “Trip The Light Fantastic,” “Land’s End” and “Glory Chords.” The String Cheese Incident punctuated the night with an “I Know You Rider” encore.
