Saturday’s full moon brought out The String Cheese Incident’s inner werewolves as the band celebrated Halloween with their annual Saturday Shebang headlining extravaganza at Hulaween at Spirit of The Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida. Wearing werewolf costumes, the band delivered a covers and guest-filled set featuring many moon-themed songs.
The String Cheese Incident — guitarist Bill Nershi, bassist Keith Moseley, mandolinist Michael Kang, drummer Michael Travis, keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth and percussionist Jason Hann — were accompanied by vocalists Rhonda Thomas and Cleveland P. Jones. Also joining the band was a horn section of made up of Trey Anastasio Band bandmates – trombonist Natalie Cressman and trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick – and Ghost-Note saxophonist Jonathan Mones.
Following two sets of mostly original SCI tunes, Saturday’s Shebang third set appropriately kicked off with Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves Of London,” which was given a “Werewolves Of Hula” setlist alteration. After howling at the full moon, the first of a few non-lunar covers came in the form of Sly & The Family Stone’s “Family Affair” and Hartswick singing lead on Pharrell Williams’ uplifting “Happy.” Hulaween attendees dancing under the Hunter’s full moon were treated to King Harvest’s hit “Dancing In The Moonlight.”
Talking Heads’ “Moon Rocks” kept the theme flowing in a funky way. The party continued with Little Feat’s “Spanish Moon” which was paired with The Allman Brothers Band’s love anthem “Revival.” Another sibling band, the Neville Brothers, kept the family spirit going as SCI covered their “Yellow Moon,” which preceded a cover of Mary J. Blige’s “Family Affair.”

More classic moon-centric covers came in the form of The Police’s “Walking On The Moon,” Van Morrison’s “Moondance” featuring Hann singing lead and Dua Lipa’s “Levitating.” SCI segued into Justin Timberlake’s joyous Trolls song “Can’t Stop The Feeling” before returning to “Levitating” to end the Halloween celebration.
