Colorado jam act The String Cheese Incident played their first show of 2018 on Thursday night at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. Cheese’s SweetWater 420 Fest pre-party marked the band’s return to the venue after nearly 19 years. After opening with “Come As You Are,” SCI went with the more recent “Sweet Spot” before pairing “Mouna Bowa” and “Cottonmouth.” Thursday’s “Cottonmouth” was just the group’s fifth rendition of the classic in the past five years. A sequence of “Can’t Wait Another Day” > “Climb” > “Rosie” brought the first set to a close in Atlanta.
Last night’s second set began with a lengthy and seamless segment that connected “Just One Story,” “Dirk,” “Johnny Cash,” “Windy Mountain” and “Rivertrance.” Cheese left “Just One Story” uncompleted before they transitioned into “Dirk.” The jammed-out sequence was followed by “It Is What It Is” and the beloved “Texas.” For the encore, The String Cheese Incident covered “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)” by Talking Heads and then said farewell with the end of “Just One Story.” Photographer Ian Rawn was at Variety Playhouse and shares his work below:
