Country music legend Merle Haggard passed away yesterday, and as noted, many musicians from around the world have paid tribute to the late icon. In response to Haggard’s death on his 79th birthday yesterday, The String Cheese Incident shared video of their cover of his “Okie From Muskogee” with members of The Flaming Lips.
Introduced by a discussion on the prospect of marijuana legalization by Wayne Coyne, the frontman of the band from Oklahoma City lead the performance of Haggard’s tune about the practices of the folks in a small town in Oklahoma (who don’t smoke marijuana). Trading verses with members of SCI, a jig-dancing Coyne was accompanied by his Lips band mate Steven Drozd on guitar for the performance on December 29, 2013 at 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado.
