The String Cheese Incident Dusts Off Bob Marley Covers In Jamaica

The String Cheese Incident brought their International Incident destination event at the Jewel Paradise Cove at Runaway Bay, Jamaica to a close on Monday. The jamgrass act honored the island’s music icon Bob Marley by unearthing a pair of covers and welcomed old friend Liza Oxnard during their second set.
The Colorado-based band opened the penultimate set of the event with “One Step Closer” from their 2005 self-titled album. A pairing of “Black And White” and “Can’t Wait Another Day” followed. The jam band stalwarts then dug in on a segue-filled stretch that would take them through the end of the frame. “These Waves” kicked things off with the night’s first surprise coming two songs later as SCI busted out Bob Marley’s “Bend Down Low.” The track from the reggae legend’s 1974 LP Natty Dread had been sitting untouched since November 15, 2014.
“Miss Brown’s Teahouse” was used a springboard for a seamless run that opened up the second stanza. The six-piece band worked through its second bust out of the night in the middle of the longtime fan-favorite with Marley’s “I Shot The Sheriff.” Last night’s marked just the third attempt on the tune since 1999 and their first since October 2015. Talking Heads deep cut “Nothing But Flowers,” “Beautiful” and the Peter Rowan-penned “Midnight Moonlight” closed the lengthy segment. Oxnard emerged next for a take on Stevie Wonder’s “Boogie On Reggae Woman” with the pairing of “Jellyfish” and “Colliding” bringing the set to a close. The String Cheese Incident looked to traditional folk song “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” to put a cap on their 2019 International Incident.
