Steve Winwood Finally Sits In With The Allman Brothers Band

We were really excited when The Allman Brothers Band announced they would be pairing up with Steve Winwood for a series of six shows. We figured there would be collaborations each night between the legendary performers. For the first three shows of the run, both bands played their sets and there were no guest spots exchanged. Thankfully that changed last night at SPAC in Saratoga Springs, NY; where Winwood and members of his talented band sat in with the Allmans.

Winwood opened the show with a hit-laden set that included “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and “Light Up Or Leave Me Alone.” Then, the Allmans came out and treated the crowd to repertoire staples before the guest spot fun began. Members of Winwood’s band helped out on numbers such as “Same Thing” and “Who’s Been Talking,” but the long-awaited Winwood/Allmans summit took place towards the end of the set. Steve emerged to lead the Allmans through Wilson Pickett’s “I Found A Love,” which they had debuted last week in Chicago. Winwood also lent his talents to a cover of The Band’s “The Weight.” The Allman Brothers Band closed out the show with a “One Way Out” encore. Hopefully the collaborations continue tomorrow night in Raleigh.

We’re keeping an eye out for video of the collaborations, but for now this brief clip of “The Weight” is all we’ve come across:
