Singer-songwriter Steve Earle recently taped a session for Canadian radio/TV personality George Stroumboulopoulos’s House Of Strombo program. Earle’s visit came just after the death of Gregg Allman, so the Nashville-based guitarist spent time talking about the Allman Brothers Band and performed a rendition of “Midnight Rider.”
Steve Earle discussed his sit-ins with the Allman Brothers Band during their Beacon Theatre residencies in New York City. He revealed he got to see the original lineup in action with Duane Allman back when Earle was 16. “This band was known for its instrumental prowess, but the Allman Brothers were the Allman Brothers because Gregg Allman wrote great songs,” Steve said as an introduction to his debut version of “Midnight Rider” adding “Dickey Betts wrote really great songs later on, but Gregg did it from day one.”
