Steve Earle assembled a number of his musical friends to perform on Monday at the 7th annual John Henry’s Friends benefit concert presented by City Winery. Earle & The Dukes, Bruce Springsteen, Rosanne Cash, Willie Nile, The Mastersons and Matt Savage each took the stage at New York City’s The Town Hall last night to help raise funds for The Keswell School, an educational program for children and young adults with autism.
Springsteen “borrowed” The Dukes as his backing band for a four-song set that began with “Darkness On The Edge Of Town.” The Boss then led the group a rousing rendition of “The Promised Land” before Nile emerged to add guitar and vocals on the Born In The U.S.A. classic “Glory Days.” Bruce’s performance came to a close with a “Pink Cadillac” duet featuring Steve Earle.
Steve Earle & The Dukes closed out the night with a career-spanning performance. Earle and his bandmates kicked off their set with “Guitar Town” and also played such live staples as “Copperhead Road,” “Someday” and “The Galway Girl.” The renowned singer-songwriter represented his latest studio album of original material with The Dukes, 2020’s Ghosts of West Virginia, with “If I Could See Your Face Again.” Earle & The Dukes finished their main set by performing Justin Townes Earle’s “Harlem River Blues.”
The concert ended in a similar fashion to past John Henry’s Friends benefits as the evening’s performers joined Steve Earle & The Dukes for a cover of Graham Nash’s “Teach Your Children.” Watch fan-shot video footage from last night’s concert below:
