Stereophonic, the five-time Tony-winning play from David Adjmi, brought Broadway to Tiny Desk Concert. The cast, along with composer Will Butler (Arcade Fire) and musical director Justin Craig, performed songs from the play behind the Tiny Desk.
Early this year, playwright David Adjmi told NPR that Stereophonic — a play that follows rock musicians in the chaotic crucible of making an album — includes “iconographic elements that I stole from Fleetwood Mac.”

The Stereophonic cast is Will Brill (who took home a Tony for his performance), Juliana Canfield, Tom Pecinka, Sarah Pidgeon and Chris Stack. The cast was joined by the play’s composer Will Butler, formerly of Arcade Fire, and music director/orchestrator Justin Craig for the Tiny Desk performance.
NPR’s Mitra I. Arthur ran down the set:
The cast treats us to “Bright (Fast)” featuring Pidgeon’s earthy twang, the Pecinka-led “Seven Roads,” and Canfield’s contemplative duo of “Drive” (supported by Stack and Brill’s propulsive beat) and “In Your Arms.” Throughout the performance, Butler and Craig provide embellishments that help build out the sonic footprint of the tunes. Our unnamed band (as the audience never quite learns its actual name) closes the set with “Masquerade” in all its grooving ’70s rock grandeur.
Stereophonic wraps its Boradway run on January 12. Watch the Stereophonic Tiny Desk Concert below:
