Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks are set to release their new studio albumSparkle Hard on May 18 via Matador Records. The band has posted a documentary short film Sparkle Hard: The Movie which was shot in Portland, Oregon last January.
Frontman/guitarist Stephen Malkmus recorded Sparkle Hard with The Jicks keyboardist Mike Clark, bassist Joanna Bolme and drummer Jake Morris during sessions held at the new Portland recording studio Halfling. Directed by Brook Linder, the 10-minute short features Malkmus being interviewed, playing tennis and riding horses with The Jicks.
“I have long been a Malkmus fan, and for years have thought very hard about what I would make with him given the opportunity, said Linder. “He’s such a unique character and there’s obviously so much history involved – making anything at all seemed pretty formidable. To me he is mysterious and nothing is obvious. The idea of making a typical visual to match the sound was out straight away.”
