Vocalist Yvonne Staples of The Staples Singers has died at the age of 80. According to reports, Staples passed away in her Chicago home after being treated for colon cancer.

Yvonne accompanied her late father Roebuck “Pops” Staples and sister Cleotha Staples as well as her sister Mavis Staples in the legendary gospel-influenced soul/R&B group The Staples Singers. The family act began in the late-1940s by singing in local Chicago churches. Yonne was recruited in 1971 to join as a replacement for her brother Pervis Staples while he fulfilled his military duties.

The Staples Singers 1970s hits “Respect Yourself,” “Let’s Do It Again” and “I’ll Take You There” feature Yvonne and her sisters on background vocals. Yvonne was also primarily in charge of The Staples Singers’ business affairs, for several years serving as the group’s manager while also performing. Yvonne continued to fulfill the same role for her sister Mavis’ successful solo career, occasionally providing background vocals prior to her recent retirement from singing.

Noted not only for their exquisite harmonies, poignant lyrical content and innovative blend of genres, The Staples Singers were prominent figures in the 1960s civil rights movement. The renowned group was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1999.
