St. Paul and The Broken Bones unveiled “Minotaur,” the latest single from their forthcoming The Alien Coast album. Inspired in part by an alter-ego used by legendary artist Pablo Picasso in a series of 1930s paintings, the soul-laden “Minotaur” arrived with a live performance video.

Guitarist Browan Lollar came up with the loop at the heart of the song while on tour in Europe. Frontman Paul Janeway altered between deep and powerful vocals and sultry falsetto in singing about getting away from one’s self after suffering trauma. “‘Minotaur’ is about fearing something within you, and the loneliness that comes from that,” noted Janeway in a press release. “Especially if you grew up in an abusive situation, there can be this feeling of having something in you that you don’t want to encounter or even recognize.”

The Alien Coast was produced by Matt Ross-Spang and is the group’s first album recorded in their hometown of Birmingham. St. Paul & The Broken Bones filmed the one-take “Minotaur” live performance video at Birmingham’s Ol Elegante studios. See how it turned out and stream the studio version below:
