Spafford :: 11.4.17 :: Antone’s :: Austin

Arizona jam quartet Spafford continues to cruise through America on their most extensive tour yet. On Saturday, the foursome brought the tour to Antone’s in Austin. Spafford delivered a six-song first set heavy on improvisation in Austin featuring such Spaffnerd-loved originals as “Salamander Song,” “Todd’s Tots” and “America.” The second set contained just one stop in the action, with the band uncorking “The Reprise” > “The Remedy” > “Weasel” to start the frame before working “Palisades” back into “Weasel.”

Spafford paid tribute to fellow Arizona act The CheekTones by covering “Sweet” to finish off the closing stanza. Back on New Year’s Eve, the group debuted a cover of “Aeroplane” by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Saturday’s encore started with Spafford’s fourth ever rendition of the One Hot Minute classic. For the finale, the quartet went with one of their oldest and most played tune – “Electric Taco Stand.” Photographer Stephen Olker captured the action:
