Spafford Busts Out Bob Marley Cover In Atlanta – Full Show Audio
By Jeffrey Greenblatt Feb 18, 2019 • 8:27 am PST
On Sunday, Spafford continued a two-night swing through Georgia moving from Athens to Atlanta for a show at the Variety Playhouse. The Arizona-based band unearthed their covers of Bob Marley’s “Exodus” and the Charles Johnson-penned song “My Sisters And Brothers.”
The rising jam-act delivered an exploratory take on “Exodus” right out of the gate. The title track from the reggae icon’s 1977 studio had sat unplayed since December 12, 2015 – a span of 251 shows. An opened-end jam followed as it eventually worked its way into “People.” The four-piece then looked to “When It Falls” from their 2018 release For Amusement Only with the pairing of recent setlist staples “In The Eyes Of Thieves” and “Legend” bringing the opening set to a close.
The quartet dug in on “Mind’s Unchained” and “Galisteo Way” to open up their second stanza dedicating nearly a half hour to the two songs. Spafford dusted off “My Sisters And Brothers” next. The gospel-tinged song that was a staple of the Jerry Garcia Band’s repertoire was dusted off for the first times since January of last year and played for just the fourth time ever. An expansive “Weasel” > “Palisades” > “Weasel” came ahead of the recently debuted “Comfortable” with a 16+ minute “All In” bringing the frame to an end. Spafford tapped “Beautiful Day” as the lone encore last night.
