Spafford Debuts Macy Gray Cover At Brooklyn Bowl
Spafford fit their first ever cover of Macy Gray’s “I Try” into their Sunday night acoustic show at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City. The band’s performance was their third of three nights at the original Brooklyn Bowl.
The band consisting of bassist Jordan Fairless, guitarist Brian Moss, keyboardist Andrew “Red” Johnson and drummer Nick Tkachyk kicked off last night’s concert with “Home (One Place I’ll Never Be)” and then presented unplugged versons of “Be Strange” and “Slip & Squander.” Spafford showed off their jamming chops on the 18-minute “Leave The Light On” that followed. The quartet’s first cover of the night was a take on Cracker’s “Low” that gave way to “Electric Taco Stand.” A rendition of the Grateful Dead’s “Eyes Of The World” and just the second “Radio” since March brought the set to a close.
Spafford came out of the gates for the second set with their debut take on “I Try.” Macy Gray released “I Try” as a single in 2000 and it was her biggest hit to date. Fairless handled lead vocals on a song the band he said was dedicated to “Chuck” who had been asking Spafford to play “I Try” for years. Next up was the classic “Parody” before the four-piece worked “Ginger Stardust” into an adventurous rendition of “Backdoor Funk.” A take on Gary Ukura’s “Sweet” was followed by “Dig Down” ahead of the set-closing “In The Eyes Of Thieves” into “Levilan Shores” sequence. For the encore, Spafford capped the night with a cover of Tears For Fears’ “Mad World.”
