Soulshine At Sea 3 with Michael Franti has been canceled. Several artists withdrew from the cruise, leading to the event’s termination.
Franti posted a statement on social media addressing an unnamed former collaborator who toured with Franti as a supporting act.
Singer-songwriter Victoria Canal, who collaborated with Franti and toured as his opening act, shared a statement pre-dating Franti’s social media post. Canal’s statement alleged “sexual abuse” and “grooming” against an unnamed artist who Canal toured with years ago.
Canal explained her decision to not name the artist was because she could not risk “the financial loss or emotional terror a lawsuit would bring.”
Calling the statement “a gift to myself,” Canal wrote:
In a subsequent social media post, Canal posted messages she was approved to share from others describing their experiences with the same unnamed artist.
In his statement, Franti acknowledged the social media posts and admitted to seven years ago having what he described as a “romantic relationship” with “an artist who was touring with me.”
“I’m aware of the recent posts this artist made about our relationship, and while I support her need to express herself publicly, the relationship was completely consensual, based on mutual feelings and attraction,” Franti stated. “I vehemently dispute any version of the story that says otherwise. I will however, take full accountability for not better recognizing the power imbalance as she was younger than me, and I was the headliner on tour. For those reasons alone, I never should have allowed the relationship to become romantic.”
After Canal’s posts, several of the acts slated to perform on Franti’s Soulshine At Sea 3 cruise canceled their participation, including Maggie Rose, Dispatch, Liz Vice and HIRIE.
“I’ve made the decision to no longer perform at Soulshine at Sea,” Maggie Rose posted on Instagram stories. “There were some troubling allegations made by a peer of mine about another artist on the lineup and I want to stand in solidarity with her. I hope you understand my decision and I appreciate your support.” .
