Smashing Pumpkins Debut The Cure Cover & Originals In Madison

Smashing Pumpkins opened a run in honor fo their 30th anniversary on Wednesday night at The Sylvee in Madison, Wisconsin. The group worked in a debut cover of The Cure’s “Friday I’m In Love,” two new originals and a pair of rarities for fans in Madison.

Original members Billy Corgan, James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin are joined in the latest Smashing Pumpkins lineup by Jack Bates and Jeff Schroeder. The band kicked off the show with “Solara,” one of four songs from the recently released Shiny & Oh So Bright Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun. to make the setlist. Classics “Zero” and “Today” were then followed by a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Never Let Me Down Again.” Smashing Pumpkins continued on with the live debut of Shiny & Oh So Bright track “Knights Of Malta.”

One of the biggest surprises of the night was the return of “Dross.” Smashing Pumpkins hadn’t performed the Machina II/The Friends & Enemies Of Modern Music standout since 2000. Iha then stepped into the spotlight to lead the aforementioned Cure cover. The show rolled on with a bevy of hits such as “Disarm,” “Cherub Rock” and “1979” as well as the live debut of “Travels” and the return of “Heavy Metal Machine” after three years on the shelf. Smashing Pumpkins said farewell with a first encore of “Silvery Sometimes (Ghost)” and “Muzzle” and a second encore of “Siva.” Check out a selection of fan-shot videos from last night’s concert:
