The Smashing Pumpkins are gearing up for the extensive Shiny & Oh So Bright Tour. Last night, the group played the intimate confines of The Troubadour in Los Angeles. The performance marked the first time frontman Billy Corgan, guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin shared the stage for a set since 2000.
As expected, Smashing Pumpkins focused on classic material over the course of their 17-song performance. Corgan, Iha, Chamberlin, guitarist Jeff Schroeder and bassist Jack Bates opened with “Hummer” off Siamese Dream. The band then looked back to their 1991 debut album Gish for “Siva” and “Rhinoceros.” Next came “Bullet With Butterfly Wings,” one of six songs from Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness to make the setlist at The Troubadour.
There was one new song as Smashing Pumpkins performed their recently released single “Solara.” Last night’s main set came to a close with the beloved Siamese Dream single “Today.” The encore started with Davey Havok of AFI adding to a cover of “Transmission” by Joy Division. “Transmission” was a staple of the Pumpkins’ 1998 sets. Corgan & Co. went on to conclude the evening with “1979,” which was fitting considering tickets to the last minute gig cost $19.79.
