Flutist Anh Phung Helps Sierra Ferrell ‘Deal’ A Winner In Toronto

Sierra Ferrell welcomed hometown hero Anh Phung to share the stage during her show last night in Toronto. The Twisted Pine flutist lent a hand on two songs at Massey Hall.

Ferrell is nearing the end of her Shoot The Moon Tour of North America. The multi-talented singer-songwriter has been hitting the road hard in support of her excellent new album, Trail Of Flowers.

Sierra Ferrell and her band — mandolinist/guitarist Josh Rilko, fiddler/guitarist Oliver Bates Craven, bassist Geoff Saunders and drummer Matty Meyer — delivered a 23-song performance for their debut at the legendary venue. Anh Phung emerged late in a set that saw Ferrell and company mix cuts from Trail Of Flowers, 2019’s Washington By The Sea and 2021’s Long Time Coming with choice covers such as Dolly Parton’s “Here I Am” and Neil Young’s “Love Is A Rose.”

Ferrell brought Phung to the stage and introduced the members of her band before launching into Long Time Coming gem “Far Away Across The Sea.” Anh Phung took multiple solos to the delight of the crowd.

The flutist stuck around to contribute to a cover of Charlie Poole & The North Carolina Ramblers’ “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down.” Ferrell has performed the song often since 2021. Phung made the most of each opportunity in adding her flute to the cover.

Sierra Ferrell concluded the frame sans guests. She then led her band through John Anderson’s “Years” before bringing out opening acts HORSEBATH and Meredith Axelrod on a performance of the traditional “Goodnight Irene” to end the night.
