“The Met’s musical instrument collection celebrates music from across time and across culture, and we like to think of instruments as art used to create art,” Jayson Dobney, Frederick P. Rose Curator in Charge of the Department of Musical Instruments at The Met, stated. “Among its treasures is the world’s oldest piano from Florence, crafted in 1720, alongside exquisite violins by Antonio Stradivari and the Amati family. We also house magnificent drums from Africa and ancient Chinese instruments, as well as a significant collection of iconic American guitars. It was a thrill to welcome Sheryl Crow and Jason Isbell, both extraordinary musicians, to view the collection before the performance.”
“Art is what sustains us through all of our history,” Crow says in the trailer for The Art of Music. “It is what documents who we are at any given moment. For me, art is the great hope.”
