She & Him — the project consisting of M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel — dropped a cover of The Beach Boys’ “Til I Die” today. Ward and Deschanel recorded “Til I Die” and 13 other songs associated with Brian Wilson for their upcoming album, Melt Away: A Tribute To Brian Wilson.

The genesis of the duo’s seventh studio album and first since Christmas Party in 2016 dates back to the spring of 2020, when She & Him began listing their favorite Brian Wilson songs. “We chose songs without any regard to their chart performance. The obscure ones hit us just as hard as the more popular songs — and all are ripe for re-imagining, re-interpreting, and re-inventing,” noted the pair in a statement. “Brian writes songs of beauty and loneliness and vulnerability better than anyone — and by sequencing them next to popular songs of confidence and love and fun, it creates a more complete picture of life on earth.”

Melt Away: A Tribute To Brian Wilson is due out through Fantasy Records on July 22. She & Him previously previewed the LP by releasing their renditions of “Darlin'” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”

The Beach Boys initially released “Til I Die” on their 1971 studio album, Surf’s Up. “Matt introduced that one to me,” Zooey said regarding the song. “I didn’t know it but loved it instantly. The melodies are stunning.”

“It’s incredibly complex—the more you get into it, it’s like a labyrinth, but one you enjoy being in,” added Ward. Hear She & Him’s “Til I Die” cover below:
