Full Show Audio: The Shady Horns Guest With Umphrey’s McGee In Boston

By Scott Bernstein Aug 13, 2016 10:13 am PDT

On Friday night, Chicago six-piece Umphrey’s McGee returned to Blue Hills Bank Pavilion in Boston for their first-ever two set show at the venue. Umphrey’s was joined by Eric “Benny” Bloom and Ryan Zoidis, aka Lettuce’s The Shady Horns, for portions of both sets and the encore.

UM opened with a “Gents” -> “White Man’s Moccasins” sequence before they connected old school favorites “Ringo” and “Miss Tinkle’s Overture.” Guitarist Brendan Bayliss, one night off a 40th birthday celebration, then led “2×2.” Bloom and Zoidis emerged to add to “Speak Up.” The Shady Horns stuck around for the evening’s biggest surprise, “Headphones & Snowcones” as well as the “Example 1” that ended the opening stanza. Last night’s “Headphones & Snowcones” was just the seventh in Umphrey’s history and only the second of the last three years. The other recent “Headphones & Snowcones” took place this past April and also featured Benny and Ryan.

Friday’s second set began with the improvisational highlight of the night, “Dump City” followed by a seamless sequence of “Cemetery Walk” > “Day Nurse” > “Divisions” > “Drums” > “Divisions.” The dark instrumental “Wizard Burial Ground” came next and then it was time for the return of the horns. Zoidis and Bloom helped out on a cover of Nate Dogg’s “I Got Love,” just the fourth in UM history. Eric and Ryan, as well as their Lettuce band mates Nigel Hall and Jesus Coomes sat-in on the last “I Got Love,” which took place on April 11, 2015. Jake Cinninger led UM and The Shady Horns through “Women Wine & Song” to conclude the second set. The Shady Horns were also on hand for the evening’s encore, “Bad Friday.” Umphrey’s plays The Peach Music Festival in Scranton on Sunday.
