Guitarist Scott Sharrard is set to release his solo album Saving Grace on September 21. The album includes the newly shared single “Everything A Good Man Needs,” which features Taj Mahal and was the last known song written by Gregg Allman.
Sharrard was Allman’s longtime musical director and helped record Allman’s final album, 2017’s Southern Blood, which “Everything A Good Man Needs” was originally intended for. Allman passed away last year before the release of the album, which earned a Grammy nomination for the Sharrard/Allman co-write “My Only True Friend.” Along with Mahal, “Everything A Good Man Needs” features renowned drummer Bernard Purdie, keyboardist Peter Levin and trumpeter Marc Franklin. Sharrard shared the following regarding the “Everything A Good Man Needs”:
Whenever we would pull into a town or a hotel on the road, Gregg would usually say, “This place has everything a good man needs.” While writing the tune, we were constantly referencing our mutual hero, Johnny “Guitar” Watson. This song is definitely a true story with references to Gregg’s life on the road. We just wanted to do a fun, funky blues about finding love out on the road. I know that Gregg would be thrilled to have Taj AND Bernard playing our song.
