Yesterday, the second annual installment of the Lockn’ Festival began at Oak Ridge Farm in Arrington, VA. Performers on the two main stages included No BS! Brass Band, The Wood Brothers, The Revivalists and Lettuce, before the evening came to a close with a pair of sets a piece from Umphrey’s McGee and String Cheese Incident. Once one set would end, the other act would immediately start up their set on the adjacent stage and the main stage finale was a special “String Cheese & The Gang” performance featuring many guests.

String Cheese was joined by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band for most of the “String Cheese & The Gang” performance, which paid tribute to Kool & The Gang and contained nine of the famed pop-funk act’s songs in total. James “JT” Taylor, who fronted Kool And The Gang during their late ’70s/early ’80s hey day led the ensemble through takes on such classics as “Fresh,” “Ladies Night” and “Get Down On It.” “Ladies Night” also featured a handful of backing vocalists as well as an additional keyboardist and percussionist. The set came to a close with the celebratory…wait for it…”Celebration.”

Lockn’ continues later today with performances from the Drive-By Truckers, String Cheese Incident, Bill Kreutzmann’s Locknstep Allstars, Phil Lesh and Friends and more. A Pay-Per-View webcast is available via Nugs.TV. We’ll have much more from Lockn’ in the coming days.

Taper Z-Man has already started uploading recordings from last night to bt.eTree.org including on of the String Cheese & The Gang set. Take a listen to “Ladies Night”:
