Trumpeter Roy Hargrove passed away last week at the all-too-young age of 49. As a bandleader and sought-after sideman, Hargrove’s talents were revered by listeners and fellow performers alike.

This edition of Saturday Stream presents a Spotify Playlist featuring the work of Roy Hargrove. Born in Waco, Texas in 1969, he later studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston. After a little over a year at Berklee, Hargrove decided to move to New York City to attend The New School. A figure in the NYC neo-soul scene in the early-2000s, Hargrove made considerable contributions to the Soulquarians collective recordings including D’Angelo’s breakthrough Voodoo as well as albums by Common and Erykah Badu.

A two-time Grammy Award winner, Hargrove also led several projects like The RH Factor while working alongside such standout musicians as Herbie Hancock, Branford Marsalis, Christian McBride, Joshua Redman, Nicholas Peyton, Dave Brubeck, Pino Palladino and others. The playlist below features those skilled performers as well as John Mayer, Karl Denson, Diana Ross, Angelique Kidjo, Nile Rodgers, Femi Kuti and several additional collaborators.

RIP Roy –
