Early next month Robert Plant will head out on a short 13-date North American tour with his backing band The Sensational Space Shifters in support of his 2017 studio album Carry Fire. The former Led Zeppelin frontman was promoting his first live dates of 2018 with an appearance on Louisville radio station 91.9 WFPK. The interview with Kyle Meredith touched on a number of subjects that included Plant’s new album, working with Alison Krauss and Patty Griffin, and if he is open to reuniting with his former Zepellin band mates.
In the wide-ranging discussion Plant talked about the unique sound of his current band, stating that they all bring their own distinct styles and that, “it’s kind of like being a really cool chef.” Going on to say that if they played “Johnny B. Goode” or “19th Street Nervous Breakdown” they would approach them the same way. Plant also dropped the news that he has been talking with Krauss about making the long-awaited follow-up to their Grammy-winning release Raising Sand. The singer-songwriter casually dropped that record could be called Raising Hell and that he has, “loads and loads of songs that could be fooled around with.” Plant also talked about how their original collaboration came to be and what he learned from her about harmonizing.
As with any interview with Plant, the subject turned to Led Zeppelin, who will be celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. Plant was asked if he ever saw himself recording with Jimmy Page again. While he was enthusiastic about his old band and joked that there was, “great sound in Mammouth Caves,” if they could get access, he ultimately dismissed the idea saying he didn’t want to do any disservice to their legacy.
