Forty years ago today The Band held a magical, guest-filled concert that was billed as their final show and titled The Last Waltz. While we detailed the most memorable moments of The Last Waltz for our latest installment of the JamBase List, one of the surviving members of The Band – Robbie Robertson – discussed the concert during a recent visit to NPR’s Morning Edition.

Earlier this month Robbie Robertson released Testimony, a new memoir about his life which discusses The Last Waltz. Robertson shared his side of The Last Waltz story during his interview with Morning Edition. He reveals his one issue with drummer Levon Helm, who famously had plenty of issues with Robbie, was that the drummer would lie about his heroin usage.

Robbie Robertson always expected The Band would continue as a recording concern following The Last Waltz. He talked about how he held a studio session that the other members never showed up at, which made him realize The Band was done. Listen to Robbie Robertson’s chat with Morning Edition:
