Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was just 27 years old when he took his own life on April 5, 1994. The iconic guitarist and primary songwriter for the band, Cobain helped epitomize the grunge music scene centered in the Pacific Northwest in the late-1980s and early-1990s. His contributions in the studio and in the live setting propelled the group into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and life and art continues to inspire people around the world.

Today marks the anniversary of the final Nirvana concert. The footage presented below comes from March 1, 1994 at Terminal 1 Flughafen München in Munich, Germany. The show held that night ended up being Kurt’s final live performance following his trip to the hospital in Rome a few days later and subsequent cancelation of the remainder of the band’s European Tour.

Cobain led bassist Krist Novoselic, drummer Dave Grohl and guitarist Pat Smear through a show-opening cover of The Cars’ “My Best Friend’s Girl.” The song was purportedly one of the first that Kurt learned to play on the guitar. Next came a rendition of the In Utero track “Radio Friendly Unit Shifter” and the Nevermind deep cut “Drain You.” The rest of the show featured favorites off Nevermind such as “Come as You Are,” “Lithium” and “In Bloom,” as well as In Utero classics like “All Apologies” and “Heart-Shaped Box.” The night also saw a cover of David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold The World,” alongside other originals.
