  • If some part of that music
  • is heard in deepest dream,
  • or on some breeze of Summer
  • a snatch of golden theme,
  • we’ll know you live inside us
  • with love that never parts
  • our good old Jack O’Diamonds
  • become the King of Hearts.

From ‘An Elegy For Jerry’ by Robert Hunter.

August 9, 1995 will forever be remembered as the day Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia sadly passed away at the age of 53 – one month to the day from the band’s final concert. The beloved iconic figure of the psychedelic era and a leader within the San Francisco music scene of the late 1960s, Garcia’s songwriting and guitar style remains an enduring source of inspiration and admiration.

For many Deadheads – including myself – it’s hard to fully express the adoration and appreciation that remains for Jerry and the music he left us. On the 21st anniversary of Captain Trips’ final ride, below is a montage of footage that assembles some of the best moments of Garcia – onstage and off – compiled by YouTuber LoloYodel.

As noted in the description, the mostly live concert footage interspersed with interview snippets, “clearly is a non-exhaustive, certainly imperfect and highly PERSONAL view of musical segments and ONLY from existing videos. All the songs may not be the ‘best ever renditions’ nor all the video qualities fitting to be the ‘best in world.’” Regardless of the caveat, the excellently constructed 15-minute tribute progresses from 1969 through Jerry’s last show at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.
