Groovy, baby!

Tuatara: Underworld

Tuatara is an on-again, off-again kind of, well, supergroup, led by Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin featuring such luminaries as JamBase favorite Skerik and REM’s Peter Buck. Their newest release, Underworld, their first in 6 years, is everything you want in your instrumental music. Groovy and brainy it’s world-swallowing, with bits of Afrobeat and funk and psych-rock and electronic and jazz and who knows what else. Twenty killer tracks, Underworld is a breath of fresh air. This is a powerhouse, must-listen album.

Bixiga 70: Ocupai

It feels like Afrobeat has been the launching point for many a great RecommNed pick in 2014. Still, there’s always room for another band that just makes you want to boogie and Brazil’s Bixiga 70 fits the bill perfectly. Bringing that big band feel, their new album, Ocupai, is a revelation of rhythms and grooves. With a hypnotic swirl of horns and percussion, Ocupai is easy to get lost in, but it never loses its grip on your body. Bixiga 70 is music to dance to and they’re damn good at it.
