Defying the pigeonhole…
The Soundcarriers: Entropicalia

Driving back from a Phish show late one night this past July, my buddy handed me his ready-to-stream mobile device and said “put some music on.” After a moment’s pause, I had the perfect pick: the new album from The Soundcarriers from Nottingham, UK. The blissed-out tropical-slash-exotica sounds of Entropicalia guided us home, somehow bringing us down gently and energizing the ride at the same time. Entropicalia is groovy and psychedelic and poppy and out there all at once, and a perfect fit for whichever direction you’re heading. As far as I’m concerned, a don’t-miss.

Landlady: Upright Behavior

Listen through the glorious 5 minutes and 20 seconds of “Above My Ground,” the opening track on Landlady’s just-released LP Upright Behavior and you’ll have a pretty good idea what this NYC band is all about. You’ll also have barely scratched the surface of their sound. Landlady is the current band from Adam Schatz who seems to have more musical ideas than there are minutes in the day and the energy and skill to make most of them happen. The album continues the grand tradition of art-school bands like The Who and The Talking Heads: weird, awesome, high octane, whiplash-inducing songs packed with a whole lotta this, that and the other; both unique and highly listenable. This music (and Schatz) is easy to love for lots of reasons, so go ahead and love it.
