If you like what we’re slinging here at the RecommNeds, be sure to check out this Spotify playlist which features all the picks from 2015 and is updated weekly. While you’re at it, check out my favorite albums of 2015 playlist which is updated monthly with only the best.

This week’s picks can be found in both playlists and hopefully you’re already hip to these and they’re already in your listening rotation, but…

Just In Case

Ryley Walker: Primrose Green

Regular readers are well aware of the tastes of the RecommNeds, ranging from psych-rock to folk to jazz and progressive rock. Every once in a while an album comes around that somehow encompasses my entire gestalt and, naturally, I’m smitten. Ryley Walker’s new album Primrose Green fits the description to a capital T. The album combines all my favorite elements and creates something both familiar and new. Folk motifs spiral around with a jazz-man’s freedom and a tripping-hippie exploratory spirit. Exquisite and captivating… highly recommended.

Matthew E. White: Fresh Blood

Matthew E. White’s debut album Big Inner was one of the first featured in the RecommNeds, the kind of album I started writing for. While White has certainly built up a name for himself in the ensuing years, it still feels like more people should be hip to his unique style of soul. So, if you’re one of those, listen up! On Fresh Blood, White’s m.o. is to sing softly and carry a big band. With a full horn and string section and backup singers in addition to his super-groovy backing band, the music is bopping with possibilities. Soul, gospel, funk, rock, they’re all in there with White shining like a modern-day, Richmond, Virginia Marvin Gaye. The future is bright for Matthew E White, so get involved.
