Fever the Ghost: Crab in Honey

…and the first nominee for “Most Bizarre Cover Art” is Fever the Ghost for their EP Crab in Honey. While the 5 tracks contained within isn’t quite that surreal, it’s plenty weird (one track is titled “A Parliament of Owls Determine the Fates of Greater Men No Less Than 5 Stories Above Us in a Dream”… yeah, right…) with proggy/psych excursions and zaps of synth mixed with incredibly groovy bass and rhythms. These LA newcomers make it work in a big way, the result a musical universe all its own. The opening track “Calico” is the kind of song that comes on and makes people say “what is this?!” and “give me more!” One of my favorite new discoveries of the year.

Oscillator Bug: Bursts of the Million

Sometimes it’s good to just get a little weird… but maybe not too weird. A good option might be Oscillator Bug, the musical project of Chicago’s Zaid Maxwell. The album Bursts of the Million is like a Picasso painting of synth, new wave and indie pop, where both eyes and ears are on the same side of the head and who knows what’s on the other side. The blend of synthesizers and guitars and electro-loops is full of surprising quirks, but ultimately listenable, catchy as all heck and a whole lotta fun.

Gulp: Season Sun

Gulp is a project from Guto Pryce from Super Furry Animals and his partner Lindsey Leven on vocals. Their debut album, Season Sun, starts from a sunny, ’60s base and then mixes in some synthesizer and other electronica with the organ and “groovy baby” harmonies. The finished product tows the boundary between psychedelic weirdness and beach blanket disco perfectly. If you dig it, a separate EP release of the track “I Want to Dance” with 3 additional tracks is a nice companion.
